Magic moments: The power of experiential alchemy

In today’s crowded marketplace, creating meaningful, memorable experiences is no longer a luxury. It’s a necessity. In my recent conversation with Jock Sallquist, an experiential designer and artist, we explored the concept of experiential alchemy, which is the art of blending design, emotion, and intention to create moments that stand out.

Whether it’s a B2B event, a customer presentation, or a simple interaction, the goal is to break through the sea of sameness and create connections that matter.

1. What is experiential alchemy? Turning moments into gold

Jock describes experiential alchemy as the process of designing not just things, but moments that are personalized, meaningful, and magical. It’s about taking ordinary interactions and transforming them into something extraordinary.

Jock shared a “Quantum Leap” workshop he designed for a client. Instead of a standard strategic planning session, he transported participants to the year 2028 through an immersive experience. Blindfolds, themed materials, and role-playing made the future feel tangible, inspiring creativity and focus.

Putting this into action:

  • Use storytelling: Frame interactions as part of a larger narrative to draw participants in.

  • Design for surprise: Add unexpected elements to engage and delight.

  • Make it personal: Tailor experiences to resonate with your audience’s goals and values.

2. Break the sea of sameness: Stand out with care and intention

In a world of cookie-cutter experiences, the smallest details can make the biggest impact. Jock emphasized the importance of care in every interaction, whether it’s a personalized meeting setup or a thoughtful follow-up.

Jock once created custom-bound presentation materials using card stock and a handmade spine cover. This inexpensive touch elevated the perception of the meeting and made a lasting impression on attendees.

Putting this into action:

  • Elevate everyday materials: Add thoughtful details to elevate ordinary items.

  • Show you care: Demonstrate your investment in the relationship through gestures that go beyond expectations.

  • Build for your audience: Focus on creating something unique that resonates deeply.

3. Four levels of experiences: Delight, inspire, transport, transform

Jock introduced a framework for designing impactful experiences, ranging from simple moments of delight to transformative journeys:

  1. Delight: Small gestures, like a handwritten note or a quick call to say thank you.

  2. Inspire: Deeper engagement, like personalized content or storytelling that motivates action.

  3. Transport: Immersive experiences, such as workshops or events that take participants to another time or place.

  4. Transform: Life-changing experiences that fundamentally shift perceptions or behaviors.

Putting this into action:

  • Start with delight: Identify one small way to make your next interaction more memorable.

  • Build toward transport: Use immersive techniques, like role-playing or setting, to deepen engagement.

  • Aim for transformation: Design long-term programs that change how participants think and act.

4. Experiential design is about human connection

At the heart of experiential alchemy is human connection. Jock’s art, which celebrates imperfection through the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, inspires him to look beyond the surface and find what’s “otherwise invisible” (also his name on Instagram). This same mindset can transform how businesses approach customer and employee interactions.

Experiences that tap into emotion and connection leave a lasting impact. Whether it’s a beautifully crafted event or a thoughtful product presentation, the goal is to make people feel seen, valued, and part of something bigger.

Putting this into action:

  • Ask yourself: How do I want my audience to feel after this interaction?

  • Focus on authenticity: Avoid generic approaches; design for real human emotions.

  • Embrace imperfection: Highlight the beauty in unexpected details or genuine moments.

Wrapping up: Start small, think big

Experiential alchemy isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about starting with intention and scaling from there. Whether you’re creating a high-stakes presentation or a casual interaction, remember that care, craftsmanship, and connection are your most powerful tools.

Let’s make every experience unforgettable.

Onward & upward,
Drew
